Atomic-Bombed Camphor Tree

They second atomic bomb ever used in human history was dropped on Nagasaki at 11:02 a.m. on August 9, 1945. It caused a terrible tragedy, the whole picture of which has not yet been revealed. The atomic bomb destroyed the facilities of the former Nagasaki Medical School and Hospital and killed a large number of faculty, medical students, and patients.
This camphor tree stood beside the entrance a former medical hospital, located 700m from the hypocenter of the blast. It was thought to be dead due to the bombing. However, young buds began to open on the tree the next year.
The tree's strong vitality encouraged the faculty of the hospital to try to revive what was lost.
When the new dental school facilities and hospital were built in April, 1982, care was given to preserve the tree. This huge camphor tree has continued to watch over those who climb this slope even until today.
To initiate efforts to preserve this tree, this memorial describes its history and shows our wish for peace in the world and for the renewal of hope.â
