Preface

In the Edo period Nagasaki was the only window in Japan which had been opened to the Western countries, and many young scholars came to today's Nagasaki City to learn the Western civilization. In Nagasaki the Medical Training School was founded in 1987, as the first public educational institution for the Western medicine in Japan. This was the predecessor of the Nagasaki Medical College.

Under thr Law of National School Establishment created after World War II, Nagasaki University was founded in 1949 by integrating Nagasaki Medical College, its attached College of Pharmaceutical Science, Nagasaki College of Economics, Nagasaki Normal School, Nagasaki Youth Normal School and others. Then, some new faculties and facilities were founded. Now, Nagasaki University is composed of eight Faculties (Education, Economics, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Science, Engineering, Fisheries and Liberal Arts), eight Graduate Schools, Institute of Tropical Medicine, University Hospitals of Medicine and Dentistry, Junior College of Commerce, School of Allied Medical Sciences and other joint-use facilities for education and research.

Nagasaki University School of Dentistry was founded on October 1, 1979 as the newest national school of dentistry. On April 1,1982, Nagasaki University Hospital of Dentistry was founded as a hospital for clinical education and research of dentistry. Then, Nagasaki University Graduate School of Dentistry was founded on April 1, 1986 to contribute to the progress and advancement of dental research. Therefore, we understand that Nagasaki University School of Dentistry is not only the facility for dental education and research but also the central facility for dental treatment in the western area of Kyushu including a number of islands.

The educational policy of our school is not only to teach foundamental humane culture and broad scientific knowledge required for dentists but also to teach highly professional knowledge of dentistry. We hope that during the six-year period of education each dental student makes a humane character and a talent contributing to human progress, and grows up as a reliable excellent dental doctor. To this goal, our School of Dentistry gives both the lectures of liberal arts subjects and the lectures and practices of professional dental subjects concerning teeth, periodontal tissues, dentition, maxillofacial area, etc. Collaboration of 18 departments (8 basic dentistry departments and 10 clinical dentistry departments) with one clinical division enables us to teach a variety of subjects concerning expert dental knowledge and dental treatment. In addition, professors in the Nagasaki University School of Medicine teach fundamental medical subjects adjacent to the dentistry under consultation of professors in both Schools of Dentistry and Medicine. During a period of one year and two months in the fifth and sixth grades, clinical practices in dentistry, which are regarded as the final course of dental education, are carried out at the University Hospital of Dentistry.

We have followed much on traditional dental education, but we also have pursued the establishment of our own dental education system. Therefore, we have made every effort to reevaluate education curriculum and to improve education method. Finally we aim at up-to-date dental education which could correspond to requirements and changes in the times. In order to further develop Nagasaki University School of Dentistry and Graduate School of Dentistry we have to promote the activation, advancement and internationalization of our dental research as well as the improvement of dental education. As a part of this policy, the School of Dentistry has been publishing the Annual Report since its foundation, which presents education activities and research activities in each department.
